Pirates vs. Content Mafia: 1-0

A couple of days ago, everyone’s favourite bittorrent site The Pirate Bay was taken offline in a spectacular ass-licking operation by swedish authorities vs. the american content mafia (RIAA, MPAA). A 50-man strong police raid resulted in a few arrests and confiscation of the TPB server farm. A summary of the event can be found on the temporary blog, and there has been quite a lot of buzz generated in the press. Following the takedown, things really spiralled out of control. The swedish police and several other government websites became unavailable in a distributed denial of service attack, death threats were published and demonstrations held in several swedish cities. The end result, is that The Pirate Bay is now back up, only a couple of days after it was taken offline, with all the content previously available online. Not only that, the server farm has now been distributed across several sites, making a new takedown virtually impossible.
Way to shoot yourself in the foot, guys! Big thanks to Antipiratbyrån and the swedish government and police, for making our favourite bittorrent site faster and more robust.
