Time to move?

July 25th, 2008 | by Futt | 331 views

Due to some performance (and customer support..) issues with my current host, I am considering moving my domains and stuff off my Webfusion Virtual Private Server (VPS). The options currently under consideration is another VPS provider, such as Slicehost, and Amazon EC2/S3 or similar “cloud computing” offer. Google App Engine is one option, but it’s currently not publicly available and I would have to learn Python…

Right now, the Amazon EC2 option looks kinda tempting, but with their rather arcane pricing scheme I’m not entirely sure what that would cost me.

Update 26/07/2008: I have decided to move to a different VPS host, and will be setting up a shiny new virtual server with Slicehost shortly. That means moving stuff, and updating DNS records. There might be some downtime this weekend ;)

One Last Update:

The move to the new server has begun! The sites will be going down one by one as they are moved, to come back up once DNS has been updated. This can take as much as a few hours.

See you  on the new server!

Well after progressively more unhelpful, hostile and clueless responses from Webfusion support, it’s definitely time to move. They seem to have no intention of even looking at the issues.

Hi there! Everything’s going smoothly so far, very happy with my slice. Thanks for stopping by, not many hosts give you a personal welcome :)

Slicehost look interesting, and definitely impressive that a member of staff stopped by your blog. :)

I really need to learn a lot of command line stuff and would like to know how to set up and secure a server (I’ve a feeling that knowledge will come in very handy in the future) - think it would be a good place to learn?

I’m a bit scared by having no cpanel or directadmin though. :D But the price for a vps is very good.

I think a VPS would be a great place to cut your teeth on Linux administration. First of all, if you screw up you can just log in and press the “rebuild” button from the web interface, and you’ll have a clean slate. If you take a look in Slicehost’s Tutorials and Articles section you will also find a number of tutorials on setting up your server, securing it, day to day management, configuring Apache+MySQL+PHP (and a number of other frameworks) etc. What you don’t find there, you can probably find in the forums.

Coming from Webfusion and Plesk, I can’t say I miss the controlpanel. And as you say, the price is definitely right, partially because you don’t pay for Plesk/cPanel licenses ;)

Yeah I used Webfusion for a while. It was…different. :D I actually have a pretty good host that suits my needs for now but doesn’t allow me to learn much more than I already know.

Might give Slicehost a go next month then. It’ll be interesting to see how I get on with command line only…

I’m making progress with my new slice! Actually managed to get a Habari install up and running. :) I said I’d let you know the domain, its http://naxtr.org

No idea exactly what I’ll do with it yet, but am having oodles of fun playing with it. :)

Sorry I missed you. Hope things go well with Slicehost. In the future, if you are looking for cloud computing options, such as Amazon, I would like to suggest Joyent’s Cloud Computing.

They are a great alternative to cloud computing and way more affordable. See what they did for Linked In and the Bumper Sticker application they created for Facebook. It is amazing.
