New Host?

August 7th, 2007 by Futt

ServerMy current webhost has been a bit up-and-down lately, some downtime and long periods of extremely slow page loads. Sometimes it’s the SQL server that’s choking, but frequently the web server itself is slow as well. Shared hosting sucks I guess, which is why I am currently considering a Virtual Private Server from Webfusion. It’s like co-location, only cheaper, and you get full root access to the OS and can install/upgrade software at your leisure. Webfusion sits on some really fat pipes as well, and there is no bandwidth cap on their VPS deals. Good stuff!

Will probably order a VPS package from them next week or so, and begin migrating this site to the new server. Going to take that opportunity to do a fresh WP install (this one is checked out of SVN and hacked to hell, afraid to touch anything heh), import content and set up a few addons. This may lead to some downtime while everything is moved over.

Update: Server space has been ordered, awaiting setup. During the domain transfer downtime can be expected.

Optimus Maximus preorders open

May 20th, 2007 by Futt

Optimus MaximusThe much hyped and long awaited Optimus Maximus OLED based keyboard can now be preordered from Art Lebedev studios. It carries a hefty price tag though, at an estimated €1256.86. The first batch of 200 will ship early december, and will be reserved for the first 200 who preorder.

While on the expensive side, this is one cool keyboard. All the keycaps are actually individually programmable OLED displays, some monochrome and some in full colour. But until I get filthy rich and don’t know what to do with all my cash, my trusty old Logitech G15 will have to do.

Paranoia

May 4th, 2007 by Futt

USAThem thar ‘Merkins are at it again. This time, a student is detained by police and put into an “alternative education center” because he’s a threat to the school. Why? He made a 3D computer game map of his school… Oh and police found a hammer in his home. “Insane” just doesn’t cover it. Really. Had I grown up in modern day USA I would have been in Gitmo right now. I made 3D models of my home and my school in the Doom level editor, and we owned several hammers and other tools.

Make sense to you? Well according to this site,

It’s the HD-DVD Processing Key for most movies released so far. I was not aware that a string of numbers and letters was copyrightable. Perhaps its just my ignorance but it seems that someone is abusing the DMCA again.

Apparently this top-secret number has caused the MPAA to fling DMCA takedown notices around like confetti. Good thing I’m not American, and thus not subject to the DMCA.

09 F9 11 02 9D 74 E3 5B D8 41 56 C5 63 56 88 C0Update (05.05.2007): A hack is now available that, according to the author, even defeats the AACS key revocation system. That is, the DVDCCA can change the 09-F9-* key all they want, the system is broken and it won’t do them any good. Whee. More on the Doom9 Forums.

In other news, the DVDCCA has vowed to go after bloggers posting the key and related cracks/exploits. Good luck on that, I think you’d be hard pressed to find a blogger who hasn’t posted it yet.

It’s war!

USB Missile LauncherNext week, we’re taking office warfare to a new level. Already we have attack helicopters patroling the office space, but recent transgressions have prompted an escalation! So I’ve invested in some Weapons of Mass Destruction! A USB powered, PC controlled missile launcher - if this doesn’t put the fear of Dog into my coworkers I don’t know what will… Next I might have to invest in an Airzooka to get those pesky choppers out of the air. Hmmm…
